Today’s Verse:
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men" - Colossians 3:23
Prayer for Today :
Heavenly Father,
In 1914, Brother Lawrence was born in the name of Nicolas Herman in Hériménil, near Lunéville in the region of Lorraine, located in modern day eastern France. Having felt he had received a revelation of the providence and power of God at the age of 18, within six years he joined the Discalced Carmelite Priory in Paris.
He was assigned to the monastery kitchen where, amidst the tedious chores of cooking and cleaning at the constant bidding of his superiors, he developed his rule of spirituality and work. He writes, "Men invent means and methods of coming at God's love, they learn rules and set up devices to remind them of that love, and it seems like a world of trouble to bring oneself into the consciousness of God's presence. Yet it might be so simple. Is it not quicker and easier just to do our common business wholly for the love of him?"
For Brother Lawrence, "common business," no matter how mundane or routine, could be a medium of God's love. Talk about adding dignity to your job!
So, what essense in your job that you hate most currently? Gardening? Laundry? Filing? Secretarial work? Throwing out garbage? Cooking? Cleaning toilet? Document Delivery? Looking after kids? "Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord." (Colossians 3:22) Father, help us to be obedient at work, as we are obedient to you, although, there are lots of job responsibilities we dislike, but Father, we respect You, we respect the job You have assigned for us to do, whether at the job fields as an employee or whether at home, as husband, wife, son, daughter, parent, brother, sister or at church etc. Lord, may You grant us wisdom and patience to do well in all our identities in life.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
